My letter to the Mayor of Fort Lauderdale and Equality Florida:
Dear [Recipient],
Hello! I am a student at Indiana University and am infuriated with the injustice that ensued downtown last night during my stay in Fort Lauderdale. During my first night on Spring Break, I visited the Brick Rock Bar and was offended by my experience and the treatment that I received by the bouncers, club owner, and especially the police officers of Ft. Lauderdale.
Initially, as I was dancing at the bar, I was called a “gay” and was encouraged to leave by multiple club inhabitants. As I exited the dance room, I was told by the bouncer to “leave, faggot!” as I stood in the outside area of the bar. When I told the bouncer how offended I was of his comment, he continued to tell me that I was a “faggot” and subsequently needed to leave the premises. I was upset and felt helpless so I called the police (because I believed this to be indicative of a hate crime), but was met with little sympathy. I then proceeded to notify the cops outside of the bar of the situation but was told to “leave the property or else you’ll be arrested.” I then moved to the opposite side of the road but was met with the same “threat” by the same cops, who refused to listen to my argument and continued to tell me to leave and go home (Officer Silver was the leading official who continued to say that I was at fault and would be unable to fight an argument against the cops). As I attempted to call for assistance, I was again confronted by Officer Silver — he told me that if I called 911, I would be arrested and that I needed to leave (although I was no longer on the premises). The argument continued for approximately 30 minutes before I left.
I am emailing to let you know that I believe that this is completely unjust and that the actions of the police officers should not go unnoticed. I am offended that my sexuality led to such an unpleasant experience and am saddened that visitors of Fort Lauderdale must experience such improper treatment during times of vacation.
Please let me know if you have any questions and I look forward to hearing back.
Best, Kyle Straub
THIS IS RIDICULOUS. I am so infuriated with the situation that something needs to be done. kyle needs to be heard, along with so many other people who are resisted everyday simply for being themselves.
I can’t believe this is what our president and vice president spend their time on. We’re in 15 trillion dollars of debt, and millions of people are homeless, and abortion is still legal, and instead of signing bills to fix these things our president is doing this. Well I’m glad you’re having fun, you fucking bitch. Fuck the United States. /rant
That awkward moment when this isn’t the real President and your rant is irrelevant.
